In New Stone Soup's discussion, Make Yourself a Table of Contents , we looked at various reasons
for every blogger to tack an index or two to every blog. We thought bloggers might find it useful to play the role of the
voyeur: let's peek through the windows of other blogs, and see for ourselves the many different uses and designs that
bloggers have found for indexes, and tables of contents.
Before we dust off our binoculars,
New Stone Soup wants to point out the table of contents used here--not just on our blog, but at the top of this
particular article post. We designed this table for another blog (and it took a fair amount of time, we don't mind
adding), and already had the template at our fingertips--otherwise, we could have simplified the design to save precious
NCAA basketball-watching time. We love the idea of a table of contents at the top of every post. You can use them for
all sorts of wacky purposes. Here, we've used these options to link the reader to: a) New Stone Soup's earlier "Table of
Contents" post; b) snapshots and walkthroughs of four tBlogs' use of tables of contents; c) a link to New Stone Soup's
home page; and d) a surprise link to a trip down Amnesia Lane (line from Dead Poet's Society) that the reader
will have to click to discover.
But you can use an index at the top of a post to do anything you want. If you
have a long post, you can link to various places WITHIN your post. If you have other, related posts, you can link to
various places within your blog. And you can make the index look anyway you want--even a simple list of links will do
the trick.
Now, back to the voyeurism.
We chose to undress four tBlogs that beautifully
demonstrate the utility of indexes. We've listed these four below, using no particular order or rank. With each of the
four, you'll find the following:
1. A small screenshot of the blog (Soup, what's a screenshot? ) 2.
Blog Name 3. A link to Stone Soup's walkthrough of the index design 4. A link to the home page of the
blog

Stonesoup you probably have not noticed that below the Usuall add edit links (the No.1 in screenshot), i have added links with the help of add/edit HTML. Which makes it 3rd way of doing the thing. and you must have noticed the on left (no. 2) i did it with the help of bloggrolling. (which can be logged in simultaneously while you work on your blog, add the post link there and it will apear in your blog automatically and you dont have to do any html coding for it.
Interesting, you're right: I didn't notice that, below your "add/edit" page links on the left, you have more indexes. You fooled me with the google button.
Question: your second point about the "2" section of the screenshot, were you referring to the right-side toolbar? Yes, I assumed you were using a 3rd party source; but, no, I didn't realize you were using BlogRolling, specifically.
When writing the last post, I realized that Inkspector has the 3rd party indexers covered really very nicely so, in that part of the post I just linked over to her blog.
One more thought that somehow I forgot to mention in this article: do you know how to use anchors? You've got some great tables of contents on your blog, so if you wanted to, you could put a very small index at the top of either sidebar with four or five links, each linking to one of your other indexes!
Something simple like:
1. My Links
2. Most Popular
3. Fashion Designers
4. Blog Roll
That way your readers could easily find your excellent tables of contents from the get-go.
This is the first time I've checked out your blog, and I'll say I am impressed and grateful. Obviously you put much time into writing a thoughtful and helpful blog. And I'm personally glad we have your info for reference. I'd like to incorporate your info to make my blog better, more usable, and hopefully for inclined for reading. So, thanks for being so helpful. "Live long and prosper" - was that Spock?

thats a brilliant idea. I will definitely like to improve my blog further.
So my blog suggests there can be 5 possible ways (of which i use 4).
1. Archives (managed automatically by tblog)
2. 'Add/Edit My links' Feature (Facility provided by tblog and being used by most)
3. Adding links with 'Add/Edit HTML' feature (making use of some simple html codes)
4. Use a 'Third Party Indexer' (like I made use of Blogrolling)
5. Embed all the desired links in a post (and then you can place a link to that post in 'Add/Edit My Links', you will have to keep updating that post from time to time though)
Did i summed it up Stonesoup or what ??? anything left? :)
Nice quotation, PastorDave, and thank you for your thoughts.
I've only been at the New Stone Soup thing for a month or so, and I expect that until I finish "filling the corners" (Tolkein) a lot of these posts will be difficult to incorporate. Hopefully, though, with a little support from other tBloggers I'll be able to make this blog useful.
Thanks again, and I'd be very grateful for any questions you may have about tweaking your own blog (which is looking very nice these days, by the way), or suggestions about how to make New Stone Soup more useful.

A question remained unanswered in my mind ..... Is there any other way to get links of all my posts besides visiting each, one by one, and copying the link from browser ???
Hope that was not a stupid question ??? :)))
I think you've nailed it, Whisper. You've already got a very good layout, and from what I've seen, you're using most of the indexing strategies intuitively--which is one of the reasons I wanted to include your blog in this post as an example.
For people who would rather have the automatic updates and save some time, I highly recommend the 3rd party indexers; the only drawback seems to be that a tBlogger only has limited access to where the links show up on a blog page.
For Taboo's blog, his own contents are glued to the very top of the page. The default links and archives are much farther down, so readers definitely need the contents in an easy-to-find location.
Inkspector has a bunch of links, like you. What I like about your arrangement is that you have your links grouped by categories. What I like about Inkspector's arrangement is that she keeps a separate index link very close to the top of the blog.
Without changing much, you could blend the strengths of your own layout with Ink's strengths by sticking a short index near the top with anchors/links so readers can find your different indexes very smoothly.
Q: Is there any way to get all of your links copied without visiting each one?
A: Kind of.
FIREFOX SOLUTIONS:
1. If you use the Firefox browser, several extensions make it possible to collect all the links on a page (if you don't, get one for free by clicking the button on my sidebar).
2. If you use the Firefox browser, there's an extension that allows you to switch back and forth between the normal layout and developer's layout. Developer's layout simply removes all the decorations on a web page and gives you the code directly.
3. Using Firefox and the extensions mentioned above, you can go to your "My Posts" page and collect every link at once (if you have a lot of posts then your posts may be archived over four, five, or more pages--still, four or five collections is better than four or five hundred, eh?)
GENERAL SOLUTIONS:
4. KEEP A LIST! Open a new text file, title it "Whisper's Post Links," and save all of your links, titles and addresses and everything, as you go. Especially if you don't have Firefox, this may take a little time, but you'll only have to do it once, and maintain it simply as you go.
5. You can use a combination of VIEW SOURCE on your browser with tBlog's ARCHIVE system--then simply cut and paste the post links into your saved link list (see #4).
6. And one more simple time saver: on your home page, right click on the comments link for a specific post and choose the "COPY LINK LOCATION" option. You'll still have to cycle through your archives to find the posts you're looking for, but at least you won't need to open every single post to find its address.

Whisper, great changes! You've really overhauled your site during this last months. Terrific work.
My only thought is this: drop some anchors! Your site doesn't take all that long to load, but if you're trying to let a reader jump to different spots on the same page, let 'em use anchors.
Let me know if you need anchor tips--I don't think I've made a post about them yet, have I?

yeah sure i will like to read some tips on anchors. hope you will help me on this.
thanx for the compliments too :)
PS. Why my technorati page stopped showing my link on your page (the above mentioned link)?
I stuffed a load of information in my most recent post ("Using Links and Anchors in your Blog" - there's a link near the top of my sidebar) about anchors, mostly with you in mind, in fact. Look it over, and if it's still unclear (I was pretty rushed when I posted that article, sorry!) let me know, and I'll screw my head on a little tighter and give the anchor discussion another try.
As far as the Technorati page link, I'm not sure. Over the last month or so, I must have referenced your blog through a link at least three times and I haven't erased them (as you can see in the post above).
I once used Technorati and had plenty of problems. I should probably give it another try, but at the time I felt like I was spending too much time slogging through the Technorati system and not enough time blogging. What do you think--should I give Technorati another chance?
